“That’s a fantastic idea. I wish I had this when I was younger. If I had more exposure to technology and business at such a young age…that would have been a game-changer.”

-Angela Mutuku, doctor in Nairobi

Portion 1: Entrepreneurship

Questions that will be answered:

The Importance of Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship will boost the girls' independence, get them out of their comfort zone, and increase self-awareness and self-confidence. Without being aware of and exposed to the business world there is scarce innovation, and hence it is difficult to drive change. In Kenya, gender inequalities in employment opportunities and economic investment patterns have widened across all sectors of the economy and at different levels of development intervention.

Many Kenyan women have experienced higher unemployment, poverty, and powerlessness as a result of this trend. The slow process of mainstreaming gender into job creation and poverty eradication policies, programmes, and strategies in a coordinated, multi-sectoral, and crosscutting manner is part of the reason for the ongoing inequity. The other reason is that successful female participation in the labour force is hampered by social, cultural, and structural barriers. Women are barely even given the chance to discover their potential passions within entrepreneurship because they are not offered the opportunity. 73% of small startup owners are men. Despite the fact that Kenyan women have increased their participation in the labour force in recent decades as a result of improved access to education, the majority of them remain concentrated in traditional "female occupations". A third of small businesses can get started with less than $5,000 and therefore by giving these girls mentors, workshops, and projects to partake in, they will be given the inspiration and motivation to perhaps one day start their own, and inspire others around them.

Curriculum Framework
